I’m sure most of you are familiar with Google Drive and what most users, use it for. If you’re new to Google Drive, it’s something that many users use to store all their photos, documents, passwords, contacts, and much more. In this blog, we cover the importance of protecting your google drive folders and list step-by-step instructions along with extra steps to take to secure it further.

Password Protecting Your Google Drive Folders

Whenever accessing your Google Drive Folder, you are prompted to enter your credentials to view your Google account. Keep in mind that if you save your password onto your google account, then your folder is left vulnerable. Another thing to remember is that anyone you have shared your password with has access to your drive folders. If you have shared your password with anyone, be sure to immediately change it.

Changing Your Password for your Google Account

It is recommended that you periodically change your password for your Google Account. We recommend changing it every 3 months, to keep your folders secure and to avoid any potential breaches. Below we have listed instructions on how to change your password:

On Website:

If you are on your Mac or PC, use the web to change your password.

  1. Open the browser and navigate to accounts.google.com
  2. Click on Personal info (this should be on the left side)
  3. Find PASSWORD and click on it
  4. Enter your current password
  5. Enter your new password and re-enter it to confirm
  6. To confirm, select CHANGE PASSWORD

On APP:

If you are using your phone or a tablet, you can change the password on your Google Drive app.

  1. Open your app
  2. Click on your profile icon
  3. Click on Manage your google account
  4. Select the Personal Info tab
  5. Find Password, and then click on it
  6. Enter your current password
  7. Enter your new password and re-enter to confirm it
  8. Select Change Password to confirm

After changing your passwords, there’s an additional step to make sure that your files are secured even further.

By managing the access, you will limit the access to your drive. This way only specific accounts will have access to your folders. Below are instructions on how to keep your folders private.

On Website:

  1. Go to drive.google.com ad
  2. Select My Drive, which will be on the left side of the screen
  3. Right-Click on the folder that you want to make private
  4. Click on View Details -> Who has access -> Manage access
  5. Remove access for anyone whose name appears under that
  6. Look for general access, once located select Restricted
  7. Press Done to confirm

On APP:

  1. Open your app
  2. Select the drive you want to manage -> click on the three dots to get to the menu-> Select Details and Activity
  3. Click Who has access
  4. Remove anyone who has access to the folder
  5. Click link settings and change to Restricted
